Marquette Finishes Eighth in NCAA MGOLF Regional

St. John's Chen, UConn's Heard Also Competed

BIG EAST men’s golf had plenty of representation at this year’s NCAA Championship.

League champion Marquette earned an impressive eighth-place finish in the team standings at the NCAA Urbana Regional. St. John’s Peicheng Chen and UConn’s Alex Heard competed as individual qualifiers in the NCAA Amherst (Va.) Regional.

Marquette freshman Vincent Cervantes finished 15th overall, the best finish ever for an MU  men's golfer in NCAA Regional competition, with a 3-under 210 at Atkins Golf Club in the NCAA Urbana Regional.

Cervantes fired a program-record 4-under 67 in the second round and posted a 1-over 72 over in the final round. Seniors Patrick Adler and Max Lyons also posted 72s in the final rounds of their college careers.

Marquette's eighth-place finish tied the program's best finish at an NCAA regional, tied with the 2019 squad that went 28-over in Austin (290-297-293—880).

The top five teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.

8. MARQUETTE, +11 (285-287-291--863)
15. Vincent Cervantes, -3 (71-67-72--210)
T21. Patrick Adler, +1 (68-74-72--214)
T41. Max Lyons, +5 (72-72-72--218)
T53. Johan Widal, +9 (74-73-75--222)
T62. Mason Schmidtke, +13 (77-73-76--226)
St. John’s Chen finished strong in the final competition of his collegiate career, logging a 27th place finish at the NCAA Amherst Regional.

The senior shot 3-over, 213 (70-74-69) over three rounds at Poplar Grove Golf Club to post the best finish by a St. John's golfer at an NCAA Regional this century. He surpassed Ryan McCormick by one spot, who finished tied for 28th at the 2014 NCAA Auburn Regional.

In the final round, Chen recorded his lowest score of the tournament, posting a 1-under 69, fueled by a strong stretch on the back nine where he birdied three out of four holes to finish third amongst the 10 individual competitors.

Chen was paired with UConn’s Heard in the final round.

UConn’s Heard tied for 40th at the event, shooting a two-over 72 in each of the three rounds on the par 70, 7,212-yard course, finishing at 216 (+6). He finished with 10 birdies over the 54-holes and played the par 5's at two-under, averaging 4.67 per hole.

The sophomore had earned a bid to compete as an individual thanks to winning the 2025 BIG EAST Championship. Chen finished third.

Heard finished up his sophomore season playing 25 rounds over 10 events, posting a 71.5 per round average.
