BIG EAST Player of the Week
David Smith, UConn, IN/OF, R-Jr. (Collegeville, Pa.)
In a perfect weekend for the Huskies, David Smith led the Huskies’ offensive attack on the way to a series sweep over Seton Hall and clinching a spot in the 2023 BIG EAST Baseball Championship Presented by Jeep starting on May 24. In a trio of games, the redshirt junior scored six runs, batted in three, while also walking twice and collecting three doubles. In the final two games on Saturday and Sunday, Smith batted 5-for-9 with two walks, five runs and three RBI.
BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week
Brant Alazaus, Xavier, Gr., LHP (Alliance, Ohio)
Alazaus jumpstarted Xavier’s series sweep over Creighton by throwing a complete-game shutout on Friday. It was Alazaus’ first complete game at Xavier, and the third complete game of his career, pitching two complete games at Walsh. Alazaus threw 10 strikeouts, did not issue a walk and only surrendered five hits, picking up the win to move to 6-3 on the season. Alazaus set the tone for the Musketeers on the mound, as Xavier’s pitchers combined to limit Creighton to just two earned runs, finishing the three-game series with a team ERA of 0.67.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Cory Bosecker, Butler, Sr., LHP (Evansville, Ind.)
Pitching five innings in a win, Bosecker allowed just one hit and no earned runs, while striking out six batters.
Garrett Coe, UConn, Jr., LHP (Lakeside, Conn.)
In 5.1 innings of work, Coe fueled a comeback win over Seton Hall on Friday pitching 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.
Cody Bowker, Georgetown, Fr., RHP/OF
Bowker captured his first collegiate win on Friday night going five innings against Butler and recorded six strikeouts while allowing three hits and no runs.
Aaron Mann, St. John’s, Gr., 1B (Little Rock, Ark.)
Mann slashed .429/.579/.786 in four starts for the Red Storm, logging six RBIs and seven runs scored. Of his six hits last week, Mann smacked five doubles.
Sal Fusco, Villanova, Gr., RHP (Albany, N.Y.)
Fusco subbed in to close out both of the Wildcats’ victories over St. John’s, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings and earning two saves.
Andrew Walker, Xavier, Gr., OF (Pittsburgh, Pa.)
Walker led the Musketeers at the plate with a .556 average as Xavier swept the three-game series at Creighton. Walker finished with a team-high five hits, including a pair of doubles, and four walks for a .667 on base percentage.
