PROVIDENCE – The 2024 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship presented by JEEP concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET when No. 2 seed Temple faces No. 1 seed UConn at Lennon Family Field on the Providence College campus. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

In the semifinals on Friday, the Huskies topped No. 4 Liberty 2-1 and the Owls took down No. 3 Old Dominion 2-1 in double overtime.

Temple is in the BIG EAST title match for the third time in program history. They made the final in 2014 and 2015, coming in second to UConn both times. The Owls (12-7, 5-2 BIG EAST) are led by BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Alizé Maes who is fourth in the conference for shots this season (59) and earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week twice. She leads the team in points (20), goals (7) and assists (6). Midfielder Devin Kinzel also has seven goals on the season. Goalkeeper Isabella Ospitale has a 1.10 goals-against-average, 75 save percentage and 51 saves. Temple had a number of ranked wins this season including No. 18 Old Dominion on Sept. 27, No. 20 Monmouth on Sept. 29 and No. 18 Liberty on Oct. 4.

No. 10-ranked UConn is looking to win its first BIG EAST Championship since the 2020-2021 COVID season when the Huskies won their ninth consecutive title. UConn (16-3, 6-1 BIG EAST) started the postseason having earned five of the six All-BIG EAST major awards. Freshman Juul Sauer won Freshman and Offensive Player of the Year, Sol Simone was named Midfielder of the Year, Natalie McKenna was named Goalkeeper of the Year and Paul Caddy's team was named Coaching Staff of the Year. Freshman Sophie Perschk leads the team in both points (32) and goals (12). Sauer also has 12 goals on the season. McKenna has played in every game this season and boasts a 1.20 goals-against-average, 73.8 save percentage and 62 saves.

When the teams met during the regular season, UConn won 2-0. The last time the Huskies and Owls met in the BIG EAST Championship title match was in 2015 when UConn won 7-3. UConn is 16-5-1 all-time versus Temple.
