NEW YORK – Butler sweeps golf honors with Derek Tabor being named BIG EAST Men’s Golfer of the Week and Madalin Small named BIG EAST Women’s Golfer of the Week. Tabor excelled at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico and Small helped her team set some school records.
BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week
Derek Tabor, Butler, So. – Tabor paced the Bulldogs at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico. He shot rounds of 69 and 67 to finish 8-under 136 and in a tie for 11
th place. The event was shortened by inclement weather. As a team, Butler carded consecutive rounds of 9-under 279. The total of 558 (-18) placed ninth in the 17-team field.
BIG EAST Female Golfer of the Week
Madalin Small, Butler, Jr. – Small tied for fifth place at the Rio Verde Invitational. She opened with a 74 before back-to-back 70s to finish at 2-under 214. The Bulldogs closed out in Arizona by setting a new program record for a 54-hole tournament. They finished fifth at 15-over 879, which beat the previous record relative to par of 30-over 894 set in 2021 at the Redbird Invitational.
Men’s Notes –
Seton Hall finished seventh in the 20-team field at the Loyola Intercollegiate. The Pirates were 10-under with a three-round total of 854 (286-276-292). Sophomore Jack Bosworth tied for 26
th with a 3-under 213 (71-67-75). It is his second career sub-par tournament…Peicheng Chen of
St. John’s continued his fine play by finishing 16
th in the Gulf Coast Collegiate. He shot an 11-over 227, which included a second round 72.
Women’s Notes –
Xavier also competed at the Rio Verde Invitational. Junior Kara Carter led the Musketeers with a 1-under 215, which was one stroke behind Butler’s Small. It was Carter’s eighth career top-10 finish. The Xavier team tied for second with Illinois State. The Musketeers posted a 54-hole score of 870 (+6). Xavier has finished fifth or better in 10 tournaments since the start of the 2022-23 season…
Seton Hall senior Ginevra Zavagli finished 48
th at the Grand Canyon University Invitational. In a field of 119 golfers, she shot 5-over 221 (72-74-75). The team finished in a tie for 15
th place. The Pirates were 29-over 893 (300-296-297)…
Creighton finished fifth in the Islander Classic in Corpus Christi, Tex. Eleanor Hudepohl, Annie Dawson and Annika Yturralde all enjoyed top-20 finishes. Hudepohl (76-76-82-234) led the Bluejays by taking ninth place, her fourth top-10 finish in six events this season. Dawson was two shots back at 236 (79-79-78). Yturralde took 19
th at 240 (81-81-78). It was her best finish since taking 16
th at the BIG EAST Championship.
