Villanova, Xavier Men's Golfers Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

NEW YORK – Villanova's Matt Zerfass and Xavier's Sam Fauver and Kyle Smith share BIG EAST weekly honors in men's golf, with each student-athlete tying for first place in their respective competitions.

Matt Zerfass, Villanova, Sr.
Zerfass earned medalist honors for the second time in his college career, tying for first place at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.  He sealed the victory with a 4-under final round 67 - the best score to par in his career.  He posted a 54-hole score total of 208, putting him at 5-under par for the tournament.

Sam Fauver, Xavier, Fr.
Fauver tied for first place at the Keene Trace Collegiate, held in Nicholasville, Ky.  The freshman golfer earned his first collegiate victory, finishing at even-par for the 36-hole competition.  He opened play with a 1-under 71 before a 1-over 73 during the second and final round. Fauver led the field in par 4 scoring (E, 4.00 avg).

Kyle Smith, Xavier, So.
Smith tied for medalist honors at the Keene Trace Collegiate, opening up competition with a 2-under 70 and closing with a 2-over 74 during the second 18 holes of play.  It was Smith's fifth career top 10 finish and his first victory as a Musketeer.  Smith ranked second in par 4 scoring (+1, 4.05 avg).

Men’s Notes: Creighton's Grant Feldman shined at the UCSD Invite at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., placing second overall with an 11-under score of 205...Feldman shot rounds of 73, 67, and 65 to earn his fourth career top five finish...the 205 was the third-best 54-hole score by a Bluejay golfer since 2003...CU finished seventh (296-286-282=864), four strokes behind DePaul (287-289-284=860)...the Blue Demons were 4-under as a team for the three rounds, led by North Chery's 12th place finish...Chery (72-70-70=212) finished at 4-under par, while Dominic Lucchesi (72-71-72=215) was 22nd and Billy Gneisser (70-75-71=216) was 25th...Marquette's earned its first win of the season, finishing at 21-under par at the Bell Bank "Pay It Forward" Collegiate in Litchfield Park, Ariz...Mason Schmidtke led the Golden Eagles, placing second overall with a career-best 8-under total score of 208, including a 4-under final round score of 68...Johan Widal tied for 10th and Ryan Banas tied for 16th, while MU's final round 279 (-9) was the lowest team score of the tournament...Villanova was second as a team at the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate, finishing at 11-over (863) for the tournament...Nova's Ryan Pamer tied for ninth place (+1, 214)...Georgetown was sixth at the Golden Horseshoe, led by CJ Winchenbaugh's tie for 20th place (+4, 217)...UConn finished eighth at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invite in Napa, Calif., posting a 5-under team score of 859...Bradley Sawka led the Huskies with a fifth place finish, posting a 7-under 209 for the weekend.
