Lyons, an All-BIG EAST First Team pick for a second straight year, is the fifth Marquette golfer to earn BIG EAST Player of the Year. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., led the BIG EAST with a 72.33 stroke scoring average this season, while posting 17 par-or-better rounds and five rounds in the 60s. He led MU at six of its 11 events in 2023-24. Lyons carded a season best 9-under 207 in MU's first event of the spring at the Puerto Rico Classic. His 17 par-or-better rounds is the seventh-highest single-season total in program history.
UConn’s Sawka was the top ranked freshman in the BIG EAST. A native of Ellington, Conn., he produced a 73.4 stroke average and shot a season-low 69 three times while playing in nine events. His stroke average was second on the team. Sawka also was second on the team with 11 rounds of par or better. His best finish was second at the Bridgestone Collegiate. Sawka also was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection.
Lyons is joined on the All-BIG EAST First by teammate Josh Robinson, who garnered BIG EAST All-Tournament recognition after tying for third place with an even-par 216. He closed the fall campaign with a career-best 6-under 207 to help MU to a team title at the Dayton Flyer Invitational. Robinson ended his MU career 10th in scoring average (74.03).
Seton Hall graduate student Wenliang Xie has enjoyed one of the greatest single-year golf efforts in Seton Hall history. In 10 tournaments in 2023-24, he has tallied six top-10 finishes, 15 sub-par rounds and six sub-par tournaments, all career highs. Xie’s 71.61 stroke average this year ranks as the second-lowest in Seton Hall history. Most recently, Xie led Seton Hall to its second BIG EAST Championship in three years with an even-par, 70-74-72-216, which tied for third overall and earned him All-Tournament status.
UConn’s Tommy Dallahan led his team with 13 rounds at par or better. He compiled a 72.4 stroke average, while playing in all 11 events. His low round was a 67 at the Surf Club Invite when he shot a 205 (69-69-67). His best finish was a tie for second at the Rutherford Intercollegiate.
Creighton’s Shaun Campbell was the runner-up at the BIG EAST Championship where he helped the Bluejays to a third-place finish. Both performances at the Championship were program bests. The senior paced the team with a 72.04 stroke average. He finished in the top 10 in six of nine tournaments, which included a win at the Throwdown Up Top at Landmand in the fall.
On the All-BIG EAST Second Team,
Marquette’s Aidan Lafferty also earns the first postseason honor of his career after a top-10 finish at Riverton Pointe. He tied for ninth at the event with a 3-over 219 and was the leader after 36 holes. Lafferty concluded his career ninth all-time at MU in scoring average (73.79), just behind teammate Robinson.
Creighton’s Grant Feldman ranks second on his team with a 72.11 scoring average, the program’s fifth-best figure in the last 20 years. He shot par or better in 14-of-27 rounds while producing three top 10 finishes and a pair of top fives. He finished below par in 5-of-9 events.
St. John’s Peicheng Chen was the medalist at the BIG EAST Championship, carding a 2-under 214 (69-73-72) while earning an individual berth to the NCAA Championship. He has finished in the top five in three of his last four events this spring and under par in seven of those 12 rounds. Chen earns All-BIG EAST honors for the second straight year.
Butler sophomore Will Horne was the Bulldogs’ top performer at the 2024 BIG EAST Championship, finishing in a tie for sixth at one-over 217. A consistent performer throughout the season, Horne’s 2023-24 campaign included an 8-under-par (208) showing at the Virtues Intercollegiate in September, where he tied for fourth.
The
Seton Hall coaching staff is led by head coach JT Harper who is in his second year as a head coach with assistants Gary Dunne and Ian Lagowitz. The staff lifted the Pirates to the BIG EAST Championship crown after being ranked fourth in the conference entering the event. Harper’s Pirates enjoyed an incredibly successful season from the start finishing third or better in six of their 10 tournaments and coming off back-to-back victories at the Shark Invitational and BIG EAST Championship. Collectively, the Pirates averaged 288.73 strokes per round this year, which ranks second-best in program history.
